St. Cloud, FL – According to the St. Cloud Police Department, a domestic disturbance call took a deadly turn Saturday evening when police responded to reports of gunfire at a home on Nottel Drive.

Officers arrived at 2760 Nottel Dr. around 6:41 p.m., only to be fired upon as they approached the front door. The officers quickly retreated and sent in a drone to assess the situation. The suspect, 48-year-old Jose Manuel Otero-Fontanez, fired at the drone as well.

In a tense standoff, a crisis negotiator was able to get Otero-Fontanez on the phone and convinced him to surrender peacefully. When officers entered the home, they found the body of his wife in an upstairs bathroom. The couple's children—a young adult and a juvenile—had escaped the home unharmed.

Otero-Fontanez was taken into custody without further incident and is now facing first-degree murder charges. He was booked into the Osceola County Jail early Sunday morning.

“We are working closely with the couple's children to make sure they get the support they need during this incredibly difficult time,” a spokesperson for the St. Cloud Police Department said. “This tragedy highlights the importance of reaching out for help in situations of domestic violence.”

No officers were injured in the exchange, but the department is urging anyone experiencing domestic abuse to call the National Domestic Abuse Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (1-800-799-SAFE).

Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
