FHP: Stay Safe This Halloween. Tips for Parents, Caregivers, and Motorists to Ensure a Happy Holiday

TAMPA, Fla. – According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), as Halloween approaches, neighborhoods across Florida will be filled with giggling ghosts and winsome witches trick-or-treating in search of candy and fun. While children focus on the excitement of Halloween, safety can easily slip their minds. This is why it’s essential for parents, caregivers, and motorists to stay vigilant and take special precautions to ensure everyone enjoys a safe holiday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).

Motorists: Drive with Caution

Motorists are urged to stay alert on Halloween night, especially in neighborhoods that don’t typically see much pedestrian or bicycle traffic. Trick-or-treaters, often distracted by the festivities, may suddenly dart into traffic from between parked cars.

  • Slow Down. Children in costumes may have impaired visibility or hearing, making it harder for them to avoid oncoming traffic. Give them plenty of time to cross the street safely.

  • Be Cautious. Watch for kids walking in the street, particularly in areas without sidewalks. Children may be too excited to remember basic safety rules, like stopping and looking before crossing.

Parents and Caregivers: Safety First

Parents and caregivers play a crucial role in keeping Halloween safe and fun for their children. Ensuring that costumes and trick-or-treating plans account for visibility, mobility, and safety can make all the difference.

  • Be Seen. Opt for light-colored costumes that are easily visible to motorists. Adding reflective tape to costumes and treat bags can make children stand out in the dark.

  • Prevent Tripping Hazards. Costumes should be short enough to avoid tripping, and children should wear well-fitting, sturdy shoes. Remind kids to walk, not run.

  • Ensure Clear Vision. Masks and headgear should not obstruct hearing or vision. If needed, enlarge the eye and ear holes to improve visibility and secure headgear to prevent slipping.

  • Stick to Sidewalks and Crosswalks. Always use sidewalks and crosswalks, and teach children to stop, look both ways, and listen before crossing streets.

  • Stay Focused. Keep an eye on your children and avoid distractions like phones. Planning your route ahead of time can help you avoid unsafe areas.

  • Make Sure Drivers See You. Never assume a motorist sees you or your children. Make eye contact with drivers and wait for them to signal before crossing.

Report Dangerous Situations

If you encounter an intoxicated or aggressive driver, or if your vehicle breaks down and you need assistance, call FHP (347) for help. In the event of an emergency, always dial 911 for immediate assistance.

By staying cautious and vigilant, everyone can enjoy a safe and happy Halloween, according to the FHP.
