Davenport, FL – In a substantial community health initiative, AdventHealth physicians and Bond Clinic collaborated to offer free sports physicals to more than a thousand high school students in East Polk County, ensuring they are ready and safe to participate in the upcoming sports seasons. The event took place at Davenport High School at 4525 County Road 547 N. on Friday, May 31, 2024.

During the physicals, medical providers performed checks on blood pressure, muscular-skeletal systems, and screened for conditions such as heart murmurs and joint issues. The initiative aims to detect and prevent potential health risks among young athletes, including sudden cardiac arrest—known to be 2.5 times more likely in athletes than non-athletes.

Dr. Belinda Gavino, an internal medicine physician with AdventHealth in Winter Haven, emphasized the importance of these screenings. "We are thrilled to help these students stay healthy and perform their best in sports. Offering no-cost physicals simplifies access to healthcare for these young athletes and allows us to contribute positively to our community," she stated.

This marks the third consecutive year that AdventHealth and Bond Clinic have partnered to provide this essential service. Dr. Panagiotis Lakovidis, CEO of

The Bond Clinic, highlighted the importance of physical exams for student athletes.

"Sporting events are not only about competition but also play a significant role in forming friendships and promoting healthy activity. Quality physicals from medical professionals ensure that students can safely enjoy their sports," he explained.

The physicians also took the opportunity to educate families on the importance of considering their health history, especially concerning conditions that could predispose young athletes to risks like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a leading cause of sudden cardiac death in the young.

Families were encouraged to evaluate their health history with questions about symptoms like fainting during exertion or chest pain, which could indicate the need for further medical evaluation.

This preventative healthcare event underscores the commitment of AdventHealth and Bond Clinic to the well-being of young athletes in their community, ensuring they engage in sports activities safely and healthily.
