ORLANDO, Fla. – Tragedy struck in downtown Orlando on Tuesday afternoon when a 51-year-old man was fatally hit by a SunRail train. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reports that the incident occurred around 2:45 p.m. near South Orange Avenue and Pine Street.

Authorities say the man had been sitting on the tracks, and as the southbound SunRail train approached, he stood up and began walking directly into its path. Despite efforts to stop the train, it was too late. The man was struck and pronounced dead at the scene.

ISC News & Media spoke with a bystander who witnessed the incident. According to the witness, the man was reportedly upset over his vehicle being towed and expressed suicidal intentions, stating that he “wanted to kill himself.” After making this statement, the man reportedly sat on the train tracks and waited for the SunRail train. When the train drew closer, he stood up and began walking toward it, leading to the fatal collision. Emergency responders covered the body with a yellow tarp on the side of the tracks.

Thankfully, no one aboard the train was injured, but the tragic incident caused significant delays in the area. Pine Street was blocked in both directions as first responders and investigators worked to secure the scene.

Units from Orange County Fire Rescue, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, and Florida Highway Patrol responded to the location at 9450 South Orange Avenue. While the investigation is ongoing, no additional details have been released at this time.

For now, this heartbreaking loss leaves the community in mourning as officials continue to piece together the events that led to the man’s tragic decision.
