16-Year-Old George Jenkins High School Student Arrested for Mass-Shooting Threat

Polk County, FL. - Polk County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested a 16-year-old George Jenkins High School student, Orion Isaiah Burts, after he threatened to shoot up the school. The arrest took place on the morning of Thursday, September 5, 2024, following a tip received by the Polk County Sheriff's Office.
At approximately 7:00 AM, PCSO deputies were notified of the threat by a Jacksonville detective. The threat was made through a call to a suicide hotline and was eventually traced back to a cell phone located at George Jenkins High School in Lakeland.
PCSO deputies quickly identified the phone as belonging to Orion Isaiah Burts, a student at the school. Responding deputies located Burts on campus, and a School Resource Deputy confirmed that his phone had been used to make the threatening call. No weapons were found during the search.
"Threatening mass shootings at or against a school and students is serious. Words matter, and Orion Burts is finding that out now. He is facing multiple felony and misdemeanor charges." - Grady Judd, Sheriff.
Burts was arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including making a false report concerning the use of firearms in a violent manner (F2), unlawful use of a two-way communication device (F3), false report of the commission of a crime (M1), and disrupting a school function (M2).
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to ensure the safety of students and staff at George Jenkins High School.
